How to Measure For Roller Blinds

Tips

Use a metal tape measure to ensure accurate measurements. Fabric on a roller blind is 35mm narrower than the full bracket to bracket size meaning that on a bay window where two blinds are fitted next to each other the gap will be approximately 40mm. This may prevent all the glass being covered.

Brackets Sizes Guide

Use the guide below for the sizes of the brackets to make sure there is sufficient room to fit them.

Bracket Allowance:

Roller blind brackets can be rotated to be either top fixed where you screw the blind into the top of the recess or face fixed where the brackets are screwed face wards into the window frame.

Deciding to face fix or top fix is determined by where you have room to fit the brackets.

The size of roller blind bracket are different depending on the size of the blind. Use the information below to determine the bracket allowance.

TOP FIX

Bracket Allowance = X

If you have decided to top fix

Bracket allowance for blinds up to 2000mm wide x 2500mm drop: X = 53mm

Bracket allowance for blinds up to 2500mm wide x 2700mm drop: X = 56mm

If you have decided to face fix

Bracket allowance for blinds up to 2000mm wide x 2500mm drop: X = 65mm

Bracket allowance for blinds up to 2500mm wide x 2700mm drop: X = 71mm

Note down the X value for the next step.

How to Measure Roller Blinds For Standard Windows

Recess

Measure the wall-to-wall width at the top of the recess and the drop from the top recess to the window sill.

Do not make any deductions, we will deduct approximately 5mm during manufacture from the width to ensure a comfortable fit.

You can order in inches, cm, or mm.

Bracket to Bracket

Measure the existing blind brackets from the outside of the left one to the outside of the right one.

The blind will be made to these exact sizes. The fabric width will be approximately 35mm narrower than the size given.

You can order in inches, cm or mm.

Fabric

Measure the width and drop of the existing roller blind fabric.

The roller blind fabric will be made to these exact sizes. The overall blind size including brackets will be approximately 35mm wider than the size given.

You can order in inches, cm or mm.

Part Tiled Recesses

Measure the full width at the top of the recess then the width between the tiles.

If the difference is less than 25mm as it will be in most cases then use the measurement at the top as there will be enough clearance for the fabric and order as recess size.

e.g. Roller blind fabric is approximately 35mm narrower than the overall width of the blind including brackets.

Top Recess - Tile Recess Difference: Less Than 25mm

Top recess width: 1000mm
Tile recess width: 975mm
Difference: 25mm
Order blind Recess Size 1000mm as fabric width will be 965mm

Top Recess - Tile Recess Difference: More Than 35mm

Top recess width: 1000mm
Tile recess width: 965mm
Difference: 35mm
Order blind Recess Size 985mm as fabric width will be 950mm

N.B. THE WIDTH OF THE FABRIC WILL BE ABOUT 35MM NARROWER THAN THE OVERALL BRACKET-TO-BRACKET SIZE OF THE BLIND

Blinds are produced within an operating tolerance of +/-3mm (width) and +/-5mm (drop)

How to Measure Roller Blinds For Bay Windows

Angled Bay Windows

Step 1

Take an A4 sheet of paper and cut in half. Place the two pieces of paper next to each other and mark a line at measurement X.

e.g.
Top Fix Fitting: Side window 870mm wide x 1500 drop
870mm - X (53mm) = 817mm

Step 2

1) Place the pieces of paper on the window sill touching the frame and slide together until the two lines meet.

2) Then using a pencil make a mark on the window sill at the point where the corner of the fabric meets the frame.

3) Repeat on the other angles around the bay.

Measure from one mark to the next as shown on the illustration. This will give you the widths the blinds will need to be.

Drop
Follow the same principle for where a door meets a window, however be sure to note down the longer measurement for the drop.

Order all blinds as BRACKET TO BRACKET SIZE

Window Handles

If your window has any handles that protrude out affecting the blinds then please order them as reverse roll.

The fabrics will then fall over the front of the tube missing the handles, see images.

Option 1: The most common method of installation

This method is designed to ensure that the two side blinds butt up against the front blind which is measured to fill the entire width of the front window.

Option 2: The most tricky method of installation

For the confident measurer, this gives a more professional fit as the blinds meet in the corner but
is dependant on a minimum frame size of 70mm. Measure from the corner to the glass, if the frame
is less than 70mm then go for option 1 or 3 to avoid the blinds not covering the glass properly.

Option 3: Good if you have small side windows
Where the side windows are so small that once the bracket allowance is made they’re too small to be
made. This method does result in a gap between the blinds and the glass will be visible.

Option 1: The most common method of installaion

1) Measure the full width of the front window. Order as RECESS SIZE
2) Measure the full width of each side window separately as they are often different and note the sizes down
then deduct X from that size.
e.g. Top fix fitting: 870mm wide x 1800mm drop. Side window 870mm - X (53mm) = 817mm

3) Order the two side blinds as BRACKET TO BRACKET SIZE.

Option 2: The most tricky method of installaion

On both corners measure from the corner of the bay to the start of the glass, if either measurement
is less than 70mm then we recommend to not use this option and use option 1 or option 2.

1) Measure the full width of the front window and deduct TWICE the bracket allowance X.
e.g. Top fix fitting: 2000mm wide x 1800mm drop. Front window 2000mm - X (53mm) - X (53mm) = 1894mm

2) Measure the full width of each side window separately as they are often different and note the sizes
down then deduct X from that size.
e.g. Top fix fitting: 870mm wide x 1800mm drop. Side window 870mm - X (53mm) = 817mm

3) Order ALL THREE blinds as RECESS SIZE.

DROP
1) Measure the full drop of the window from where the brackets are mounted to where the fabric
should finish.

WINDOW HANDLES
Follow the instructions above.
